San Diego Monastery


The San Diego Monastery, a branch of the Vedanta Society of Southern California, is located near Balboa Park, at 1440 Upas Street. It holds Sunday lectures, evening classes, and meditation and vesper services.

Iyengar Yoga:  Elements of Yoga Asana Practice to Enhance the Process of Meditation 

This four-week course in Asana and Breathing Practices will be taught by Carolyn Belko bio, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.  They will be held at the San Diego Vedanta Monestery, and it is recommended that you commit to the full four-week course in order to benefit from the teaching method.

Prerequisite : Participants must be able to practice standing yoga asana. Participants are asked to bring their own yoga. mat and blanket to each class.

There is a suggested donation of $10/class to the Vedanta Monastery.

Tuesday Evening Study Circle

Vedanta Sara: the Basics of Advaita Vedanta is an informal class to understand and reflect on the principles and practices of Advaita Vedanta. If you are interested in joining, you may sign up at the monastery or talk with Swami Harinamananda.

You are invited to enjoy evenings of spiritual exploration, discussions, music, and/or multimedia presentations. Prior to these main events, Arati (Vespers) is conducted at 6:00 pm, and frequently there is a potluck before the talk begins.

Weekend Group Worship & Spiritual Talks 

10:00 am:  All are welcome to share in a guided group worship in the shrine room, preceding most Sunday lectures. Please note: this worship may be suspended when there is a special program or when the resident swami is away.

11:00 am:  Please plan to join us for enriching lectures and Q&A that focus on spiritual matters which impact our daily lives and our highest aspirations. Talks begin at 11:00 am unless otherwise noted.

06/11   Spiritual Cafe: Hacking Your Communication within Conversations of Conflict

The San Diego InterReligious Council will hold Spiritual Cafe, at the San Diego Monastery, led by John Michno from Non-violence Communication (NVC). The topic will cover finding common ground, when you totally disagree with someone.

07/07 & 07/08     The Bhagavad Gita’s Spiritual Approach in Life: a Two-Day Spiritual Retreat with Swami Sarvapriyananda

Swami Sarvapriyananda, visiting from the Vedanta Society of New York will lead a two spiritual retreats, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Each session will include a Q&A period, and a simple lunch will follow. Everyone is welcome to attend.
